Puppy Training Troubles

Thank you to everyone who e-mailed week before last to welcome the newest McKee, our Sheltie puppy, Miss Lilly.

She's quickly wagged her way into our hearts-and everything else. This week she discovered the joyful abandon that comes from dissecting toilet paper rolls.

She bats the roll until it begins to unwind, then tugs on it with her puppy teeth. Once she has about a six-foot strand of fluffy white tissue, her real fun begins.

Lilly shreds her prey into a million pieces as if she's just cornered a fox, and then triumphantly scatters the remains throughout the house. The soggy bits almost glue themselves to the carpet up and down the hall and in all the bedrooms.

The problem is easy enough to solve when I'm home alone; I just keep the bathroom doors closed. Trouble begins after school each day. My two sons just can't seem to remember that simple remedy (Actually, there are a lot of things I ask them to do that they can't seem to remember!), which leads me to crawling each day on my hands and knees picking up the whole mess.

Last Friday I reached my end. "Boys!" I said in my most serious mommy voice, interrupting their thirty minutes of after-school sofa slouching and cartoon watching, "Lilly has made another mess shredding toilet paper. One of you didn't close the door again after you went to the bathroom. Both of you please come help me clean up all the bits."

"Oh mom!" they protested almost in unison. Then one continued, "Not now, I'm tired. It was a busy day at school. Can't you just do it for me?"

I can assure you, I didn't work alone!

Parenthood-a new surprise guaranteed each day!
